Create an Instagram App

Rate this guide

As a Network Creator, you can create an Instagram App that allows you to add photos from the selected Instagram account!

A few important details before we start:

Creating a Facebook App

Before we can create an Instagram App that should be added to the network, we first need a Live Facebook App.

If you already have an app that you created before for Facebook Sign In or Facebook Comments, you can use it for Instagram integration as well. In this case, you can skip the next steps and go straight to the “Creating your Instagram App” section.

Navigate to the dashboard from the green administrative toolbar in the upper left corner of your network. Click on the first icon to go to the Social Site Manager. From this page, click on the “Instagram Integration” link. This will take you to your Instagram Integration page.

Click on the link to open up a new tab where you will be directed to the Facebook Apps page. If you aren’t immediately directed to this screen, paste this URL into the address bar: https://developers.facebook.com/apps

From there, click on the ‘Create App’ button on the top right corner of the screen.

For the app type, you should select “Consumer” and click continue

For the “Details” section you should add an application name (for example, your networks title, or any other name you like), then fill in your contact email address, and finally click on the “Create App” button;

From there you will be directed to the newly created app’s Dashboard. On the left side of the page, you will see a navigation menu. Click on the “Settings” drop-down menu and select “Basic” settings.

On the Basic settings page, you will need to fill in the fields outlined on the screenshot with the following information:

“App domains”
https://EXAMPLE.ning.com/ – your network’s URL
“Privacy Policy URL” and “Terms of Service URL”
https://EXAMPLE.ning.com/main/authorization/termsOfService
“User data deletion”
https://EXAMPLE.ning.com/main/profilesettings/edit
You will also need to upload an app icon and select a category.

Once all information is added, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the “+ Add Platform” button. Select a “Website” option and click “Next”. In the appeared field put your network’s URL and do not forget to save the changes you have made.

Once the changes are saved, you can turn your application Live.

Creating your Instagram App

To get started with creating your Instagram app, open your Live Facebook app’s Dashboard. You will be presented with a list of products that can be added to your application. Please select the “Instagram Basic Display” product and click on the “Set up” button.

If you set up your Facebook app correctly, you will be able to create a new Instagram App

You then will be redirected to the newly created app’s settings. You will need to fill in the fields outlined on the screenshot with the following information:

“Client OAuth Settings” – “Valid OAuth Redirect URIs”
https://EXAMPLE.ning.com/ – your network’s URL
https://EXAMPLE.ning.com/main/instagramapp/check
https://EXAMPLE.ning.com/main/instagramapp/edit
https://EXAMPLE.ning.com/main/instagramapp/addaccount

“Deauthorize” – “Deauthorize callback URL”
https://EXAMPLE.ning.com/main/instagramapp/logout
“Data Deletion Requests” – “Data Deletion Request URL”
https://EXAMPLE.ning.com/main/instagramapp/delete
Do not forget to save these changes.

Once these changes are saved, proceed to the “App roles” – “Roles” from the menu on the left side of your screen. Find the “Instagram Testers” field and click on the “Add” button.

Please, note, the Instagram account you add as a tester here will be an account from which the photo feed will be published to your network

Start entering an Instagram username in the pop-up window and select the correct one from the drop-down menu. Click the “Submit” button once the correct profile is selected.
Once the invite is sent, the owner has to accept it in the settings of their account. You can either click on the link in the app or copy & paste the following URL into your address bar: https://www.instagram.com/accounts/manage_access/
The invite should be accepted on the “Tester Invites” tab of the “Apps and Websites” settings.

You are almost done! Now, return to the Instagram Basic Display app and copy Instagram App ID with Instagram App Secret.

Return to the network and paste them to their corresponding fields. Click the “Save” button.
Once the information is saved, the Instagram pop-up will appear. Both options must be selected before you click “Allow”.

Now, you can either add an Instagram page or an Instagram widget to the existing page of your network.
