Create a New Translation

Rate this guide

Using the Language Editor, you can create a new translation based on any of Ning’s six currently supported languages. This allows you to use your network in an unsupported language such as Hindi, Hungarian, Han Chinese or Hopi. You can also use this feature to translate your network into a different dialect of a currently supported language (Portuguese from Portugal, Spanish from Argentina, or Canadian French, for example).

Ning 3.0 currently supports English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian and French. Use any of them as the base language for your translation.

To create a new translation, click on the “Language Editor” link in your network’s Social Site Manager, then select “Create a new translation for your Ning Network.”

Next, you’ll be taken to a screen where you can name your translation and choose the base language for the translation.

After that, you’ll be taken straight to the first page of the Language Editor, where you can start translating! This process can take a while, but you can always save your work and finish up later.

Be sure to use the same formatting in the original language’s translation. For example, be sure to include curly brackets in strings such as “{1} hours ago.”

Once you’ve finished your translation, head over to your General Settings panel in the Social Site Manager, and choose your new translation from the Language drop-down. Save your changes, and your network will begin using your new translation immediately.

Any untranslated strings in your translation will use the base language’s strings.

Note: We regularly update the strings in our 6 supported languages as we add new features, so you’ll want to revise your translation from time to time to make sure it has all of the latest strings in your target language.
