I want to add this feature to my network, but don’t know how it will work. Do I make everyone pay for site membership, even if they’re already members?
You can do this a few different ways: You can give existing members a free lifetime membership and only charge new members any site membership fees; you can give existing members a grace period so that they have time to adjust; or you can begin charging everyone, existing and new, for membership fees on a date of your choosing.
I use the Donate app currently. Can this do the same thing?
This works in a similar fashion to the Donate app, but is more seamlessly integrated into your network, so that there’s no messy PayPal button code to mess with, and allows you to select minimum and maximum amounts that people can contribute, as a sliding (but required) scale.
How can I make different prices for different pages?
As a Network Creator, you can create a new Paywall for each price point you want to make. Go to your My Network tab and then “Paid Access” located under settings. Click on the “Create New Paywall“ link to get started!
Do I need to have a PayPal account?
In fact, you need a verified PayPal account to activate Paid Access. If you don’t have a verified PayPal account, or have no PayPal account at all, you’ll need to create a new PayPal account and connect it to a bank account. After PayPal verifies that you have connected an active bank account, it may take up to 48 hours to take effect. Not to worry, the process is simple and easy to complete. Once you get verified by PayPal you can start using Paid Access.
Will my members need to have a PayPal account?
Your members don’t need a PayPal account to purchase a subscription. When they choose to purchase a subscription they may use any valid credit or debit card to pay.
How can I charge my members in a certain currency?
The Paid Access feature is tied to your billing account, so the currency you are set up to pay for your network subscription in is the currency which your members will be charged for any Paid Access membership fees in. These are the currently supported currencies:
USD, GBP, Euro, Australian Dollar, Mexican Peso
Please note that if your billing account is set up in another currency, you will not be able to use this feature.
How does member moderation impact Paid Access?
If you’ve chosen to approve new members who have signed up for your network and also have activated Paid Access on the network level, the member will have to be approved by you or a network administrator before they will be prompted to pay for your Ning Network. First, the member fills out the sign up form and then their membership is pending approval. Next, once you approve or an administrator approves their membership, the member will receive an email notification that they were approved. Once they return to your network and click “Sign In” they will have to complete the sign up flow. Last, they will see the paywall prompting them to pay for your Ning Network. If they don’t complete this last step you will not see them in the “Subscribers” tab on the Paid Access home page and they won’t have full access to your network, even though you will see them as a member of your network on the Member Moderation page.
How will Paid Access impact email verifications on my network?
If you have chosen to approve new members before they join AND had activated Paid Access, we will no longer ask new members to verify their email address nor fill out a Captcha and/or quiz. You will see “?” icon when going to “Controls” under Members on your network’s Dashboard. Scrolling over this “?” icon will show a pop-up that displays this information.
What if I’m not seeing a member in the “Subscribers” tab of my Paid Access home page?
If someone is listed as a member of your network on the Member Moderation page of your Dashboard, but isn’t showing up in the “Subscribers” tab of the Paid Access home page if you have a paywall set up on the network level, this most likely means that the member has not successfully completed the flow to pay for access to the paywall on your network. Please note that if you haven’t chosen to comp your existing members, they won’t be prompted to pay for your Ning Network until the next time they sign in to your network. If you want inform you members that your network now requires a subscription, you can use the Message Broadcast feature to send them a message.
What will my members see on their billing statement?
Your members’ billing statements will reflect your Network’s name along with the payment amount. Ning will not appear anywhere on member billing statements or during your members’ purchase flow. Paid Access was designed to give you total control over your brand.
How can I see what I’ve earned so far?
You’ll be able to see what plan type and member status each member has on your network from the Manage Paywalls page. To see how much you have earned, please go to PayPal and sign in to your account there for keeping track of this information.
What happens when a member’s subscription is about to run out? Will they be notified ahead of time or will they simply be locked out of the page/group/network?
At this time, there is no auto renewal for member subscriptions when they expire. When your members’ subscriptions run out, they will see an automated renewal message indicating that they need to renew their membership to continue access.
Will administrators/moderators be able to see the page/group/network without paying?
By default, your admins and moderators will still need to pay for a membership to have access to your Network or view exclusive content. However, you can choose to comp a Paywall for them so they don’t have to pay.
Please note that once you create a published paywall for a group or page your administrators or moderators won’t be able to delete that group or page.
How Do I Comp a Paywall for a Member or Admin?
To comp a Paywall for a member or admin head over to your Paid Access homepage and click on the Subscribers tab.
You can now sort your member or administrators list by paywall type or find a specific member by using the Search field.
The last step is to select the members you’d like to comp, then choose “Comp” from the drop-down menu. Please note that once you choose a comp term for a member and publish it, you can’t go back to edit it.
Once you’ve created a paywall, you can’t delete it. You can, however, unpublish a paywall by heading to your Paid Access home page.
To unpublish a paywall, click on the “Edit” button located under the Action column from your Manage Paywalls tab.
On the next page, click the “Unpublish” button. You’ll see a lightbox pop up, asking you to confirm that you’d like to unpublish your paywall. Click “Confirm” to continue.
You’ll now see a confirmation message appear at the top of your group, page or network, indicating that you’ve successfully removed this paywall.
I want to change what it says on the main page for this feature. Can I add links to my website, or customize the look of the page?
HTML is not allowed in any of the editable fields, and will display as raw code, so any changes you make should be plain text. You can customize the message your members see when they view your paywalls to explain the paywall to new members or describe why a certain group or page is worth paying for.
To edit your message, head to your Paid Access home page from the dashboard. From there, click on the “Edit” button next to the paywall you’d like to work with. Click on the “Edit” button next to New Member Sign Up Message. Now you can customize the message fields.
Click “Continue” when you’re finished to save your settings!
What if I turn on Paid Access then turn it off before charging anyone? Do I still have to pay for the feature?
You will be charged the monthly fee for the Paid Access feature just like a monthly subscription for a Ning Network. The payments for Paid Access will align with your monthly bill date and be charged to the same payment method used to pay for your network subscriptions. If you choose to deactivate the feature, we will cancel your subscription at the end of your one-month term.
For more information, please see our Billing and Refund Policy.
I’ve tried out this feature and decided it’s not for me. Let me out!
Deactivate Paid Access on your Network at any time by clicking on the “Deactivate” button located on your Manage Paid Access Page. Please refer to the “Best Practices Guide” PDF file, which is located on your Paid Access home page, for tips on notifying members before removing this feature.
